Get your 2022-23 Nenana Lynx Yearbook before Time Runs Out! For a Hardcover book – it’s $40 by May 5th. From the 5th of May to the 12th of May it’s $45 and after that – it will have to be mailed to you and will cost you $58. You can pay with cash or check to Teena Calkin – please do this in person so you can receive your receipt. OR for credit card payments you can go to the Nenana City School website at nenanalynx.org, go to the very bottom where it says online payment – click there enter donation/yearbook, your name and the amount – either $40 or $30 and pay online. For a Softcover book – it’s $30 by May 5th. From the 5th of May to the 12th of May it’s $35 and after that – it will have to be mailed to you and will cost you $42.50. Same instructions as above just enter softcover yearbook, your name and the amount. After May 12th – the only way to receive a yearbook is to purchase it online and have it shipped to you, the cost being either $58 or $42.50. We have a limited number of books so please order now!! Dear Nenana Parents, Students, Staff, and Community: In order to effectively meet the School District's mission and vision, the District has committed to regularly reviewing and selecting the curriculum used to teach students at Nenana City School. You can find details and more information on our website, here. Part of this process is an opportunity for the public to review curriculum materials considered by the District's relevant curriculum committee, made up of board members, administrators, and teachers. Nenana City School District is currently in the process of selecting a comprehensive Science curriculum for all 9th through 12th grade students. The intention is to purchase a curriculum by the end of this school year, to begin implementation next school year. The curriculum will be used for 7 years. The committee has reached the point of public review, and would like to seek your input on all curricula currently under consideration. At your convenience, please find the hard copies of the curriculum in the school library for consideration. The library will be open from 4pm-7pm from April 11th through the 25th for this purpose. You may use this form to complete the review. There are digital components to each curriculum, samples of which can be provided to you upon request. Greetings Lynx Families, I hope this email finds you well and having enjoyed the first week of April. We are on the final lap of the school year, headed into turn one this weekend with Prom! If you are interested, the Grand March will take place from 6:00-7:30pm in the gym and is open to the public. Dinner, dance and after prom will follow. Last weekend, Nenana skiers won the 2023 Small Schools Ski/Biathlon Championship, known as the Cloud Cup. Congratulations to coach Chuck Hugny and all of the skiers! Also last week, elementary students participated in the community Health Fair. Alongside the many after school offerings currently occurring via the 21st Century Grant, this week TCC sponsored a basketball clinic for students in grades K-12. Coach Al Sokaitis is a former college coach and currently works with the New York Knicks, UConn Huskies and various other college programs. Students seemed to enjoy the opportunity! Also, last night was the April Literacy Cafe. Thank you to the families who attended and to our staff who provided the excellent programming! Next weekend, Mr. Mudge will be taking over sixty students to Anchorage for the Regional Music Competition. Best of luck to all of our musicians! There will also be a Choose Respect March at noon on April 13th. Please contact Maryellen Robinson with any questions about the march. Students will be taking the statewide AK STAR assessment during the week of April 17. This summative assessment will serve as a measure to indicate academic growth since our fall and winter benchmark assessments. Teachers and administrators will analyze student reports to inform our professional development needs as well as our intervention efforts for students who are not showing adequate proficiency and/or growth. Parents can support the cause by helping to ensure students are getting a good night's rest and healthy nutrition. The week of the 17th will also be school spirit week, culminating with Wild And Crazy Kids Olympics (WACKO) events on Friday the 21st. Junior High students have plans to travel to UAF for a drone workshop on the 21st as well. They have been working with a team from UAF on soil science, river sampling and ice thickness monitoring. On April 22, students involved in Tae Kwondo will be participating in a tournament here in Nenana. Please come out and support! Lastly, on April 25th, seniors will be provided the opportunity to travel to Healy for a Financial Reality Fair. Plans are in the works for the final weeks of school, which include the school's participation in community cleanup, the annual fun run, and rehearsal for graduation. Greetings Lynx Friends and Families, It is refreshing to see the calendar flip to March today! I'd like to pass along a big thank you to the many parents/guardians and teachers who were able to connect during parent/teacher conferences, and to Mrs. Andy Corbin for facilitating the scheduling process. I hope you all found the experience meaningful. We have rounded the corner into the home stretch of the third quarter, which ends on Friday, 3/10. Juniors and Seniors are busy completing their applications for financial aid, scholarships, and summer enrichment programs. Bryce Gerald, our Transition Coordinator has played an important role helping to bring college admissions representatives into the building to provide information and support. Teena Calkin has been working hard to bring after school programs to life. Thank you Teena and the various folks who have stepped up to be advisors for these activities. The current offerings include; robotics, lego league, taekwondo, weight training, esports, and yearbook. Stay tuned for more program offerings as the gym becomes available following basketball season. Thank you also to winter coaches; Chuck Hugny (cross country skiing), Collin Stone, Olivia Layfield, and Bryce Gerald (boys and girls basketball), and Steven Matus (high school and middle school wrestling). A big thank you also to Megan Baker and the Ice Classic for supporting the wrestling program by allowing practices to be held in the Civic Center. Boys and girls basketball will travel to Glennallen for regional competition just prior to Spring Break, with games being played 3/8-3/11. Spring break falls the week of March 12, with school resuming on Monday, March 20. I hope everyone is able to enjoy the longer days and that many of them are accompanied by sunshine! As we return from break, it will be a race to the finish, with numerous 4th quarter traditions taking form. April will bring with it Prom, state testing, Earth Day, Music regionals and the state solo/ensemble music festival in Anchorage, a taekwondo tournament, a financial reality fair, and the Spring musical performance. All of this of course will culminate with graduation activities and the high school commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 14. Wishing you all a wonderful Spring and Tripod Days weekend! Parent Teacher Conferences February 23rd & 24th, 2023. Dear Parents/Guardians, With the semester racing along, it's time again for Parent Teacher Conferences. Conferences will take place on Thursday & Friday, Feb. 23-24. Students will be released from school at 1:45pm both days, with buses running thereafter. Conferences will be scheduled from 2:00pm-4:30pm. Elementary conferences will be pre scheduled as has been done in the past, schedules will be mailed out to parents by the end of the week. High School parents please call the school office to schedule your conferences with teachers. High School teachers will be available from 2pm-4:30pm in an open house environment, but scheduled appointments will take priority. If you have any questions, please contact the school office. The AK Child Nutrition Program, a state requirement of the National School Lunch Program, requires districts to draft and periodically review a Local Wellness Policy for each school in the district. Greetings Lynx Families and Friends, I hope this message finds you healthy, warm and enjoying the new year.  We are off to the races here at Nenana City School, wrapping up week 4! My intention with this message is to share a few pertinent details regarding scheduling for the second semester. Next week, we will host the Nenana Invitational Tournament (basketball) on Thursday (2/2) thru Saturday (2/4).  Participating teams include; King Cove, Sand Point, Fort Yukon, Northway, Su-Valley, Tri-Valley, Cook Inlet Academy, and Nenana.  As always, you can find the most up to date information regarding school events on the school website (www.nenanalynx.org).  Tournament brackets and game times are available in the Live Feed and on the school and community Facebook page.  On Wednesday (2/1), there will be an Early Out.  Students will be released at 2:00pm.  Buses will run thereafter.  Staff will be involved with programming meetings the remainder of the day.  As such, students should not be in the building as they will be unsupervised.  School will resume on Monday (2/6).  The end of the third quarter is Friday, 3/10.  With next week being a short one, mid-quarter is essentially upon us.  Please continue to support your student in attending school as often as possible and in taking advantage of enrichment opportunities available beyond the academic day. Spring break is March 11-March 19, with school resuming on Monday, March 20.  AK STAR testing will take place in April.  More information will be communicated as the dates approach.   Lastly, the graduation ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 14 at 1:00pm.  Graduation was previously scheduled for Saturday, 5/13.  However, this date conflicts with the ASAA State Solo Music Ensemble this year which impacts many of our high school students.  I hope this information is helpful in your long range planning for the semester.  Your continued support of our students and staff here at Nenana City School is greatly appreciated. NCS Friday Update 12-9-22 Greetings Lynx Families, I hope this message finds everyone warm, plowed out, and anticipating the holidays ahead. I wanted to get one last update out before it gets away from me and everyone heads their separate ways for the winter break. Our last day of classes is Friday, December 16. Students and teachers are very busy throughout the high school reviewing all they've learned during the semester in preparation for final exams, wrapping up book reports and class projects, and finishing up MAP Growth testing. Middle and high school students are putting the finishing touches on their acts for the music performance next Wednesday. Elementary classrooms are a buzz with holiday themed activities alongside the day to day learning and instruction. Tonight, Student Council is sponsoring a community Movie Night, which begins at 5pm. On Saturday, they are sponsoring a Winter Formal dance beginning at 8:30pm. Have fun and thank you Student Council and Student Council Advisors (Mr. Calkin, Mr. Layfield, Mr. Matus, Mr. Tulloch, and Mrs. Gerlad)! Parents/guardians should have recently received a mailing of their student's AK STAR assessment results. If you have any questions interpreting the data, please do not hesitate to reach out to the main office or your student's teacher. Similarly, if you would like to discuss your student's achievement levels and/or growth levels on the MAP Growth tests, please reach out to classroom teachers or the main office. Teaching staff have begun to review these collaboratively to ensure that we are aligning our intervention efforts in the areas of greatest need. Wrestlers are traveling to Valdez today for their regional competition. Thank you to coaches Stephen Matus and Kaylee Larson for their time and energy in getting this program off the ground again this year. Thank you also to Megan Baker and the Ice Classic for supporting this initiative by opening the Civic Center for a practice facility. Congratulations to Mr. Mudge and the K-6 students for their recent music performance. Well done!   On Wednesday of this week a team of professionals from TCC Wellness and Prevention & Behavioral Health spoke to middle and high school students about healthy decisions and strategies for coping with stress and anxiety, which often accompany the holidays and spending time with family. They also discuss resources available to support students as they navigate life's transitions. I also want to recognize and formally thank Ms. Leslie Scranton, our itinerant counselor, for her service to the school community this semester. Leslie has been meeting weekly with elementary and middle school classrooms and slightly less frequently with high school students throughout the semester to provide instruction and coaching on a variety of social and emotional topics and personal safety. In addition, Ms. Scranton has been meeting routinely with a number of students via Zoom to provide professional mental health counseling. Ms. Scranton is scheduled to provide lessons to high school students during the first few weeks in January to introduce content covered under the Alaska Safe Children's Act known as Bree's Law.
